Hi my friend,
here's some info for you, i ran this in root

soekris [~]: ls -ail /var/log/messages
5497 -rw------- 1 root root 878K 11.02.2005 11:22:48 /var/log/messages

soekris [~]:`find /var/log/ -maxdepth 1 -name "messages*" -mtime -31 | sort -r`
-bash: /var/log/messages: Permission denied

soekris [~]: chmod 644 /var/log/messages soekris [~]: `find /var/log/ -maxdepth 1 -name "messages*" -mtime -31 | sort -r`
-bash: /var/log/messages: Permission denied

soekris [~]: chmod 777 /var/log/messages soekris [~]: `find /var/log/ -maxdepth 1 -name "messages*" -mtime -31 | sort -r`
-bash: /var/log/messages: Text file busy

Well you certainly know more than me in Unix Shell scripting and file permissions, i can't figure out why the file can't be read. If u can help, i'd appreciate.

Regards.
